At Hormead, we recognise that everyone is a unique child of God with individual gifts and talents that need to be recognised and nurtured. Art at Hormead gives children every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about art and artists across cultures and through history. Our art curriculum engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to develop their confidence to experiment and create their own works of art.
Our curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. Children learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles and 3d work, and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas. Children will be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists. The skills they acquire are applied to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth.
In art, children are expected to be reflective and evaluate their work, thinking about how they can make changes and keep improving. Art enables the children to express themselves in a creative, imaginative manner and through exploration. All children are challenged in the art curriculum to reach their full potential. Art will also develop student’s individuality, allowing them to think and express themselves with confidence, equipping them with essential life skills.
At Hormead, have chosen to use 'Kapow Art' as our inspiration for planning sequential lessons, allowing children to build their skills and knowledge to apply to a range of outcomes. The formal elements, a key part of the national curriculum, are also woven throughout the units. Key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity to allow pupils to build on their previous learning.
Our units in each year group are organised into four core areas:
• Painting and mixed-media
• Sculpture and 3D
• Craft and design
Art lessons are always practical in nature and encourage experimental and exploratory learning with pupils using sketchbooks to document their ideas. Teachers differentiate every lesson to ensure that lessons can be accessed and enjoyed by all pupils and opportunities to stretch pupil’s learning is available when required. Knowledge organisers for each unit support pupils by providing a highly visual record of the key knowledge and techniques learned, encouraging recall of skills processes, key facts and vocabulary.
Our Progression of skills and knowledge shows the skills that are taught within each year group and how these skills develop to ensure that attainment targets are securely met by the end of each key stage. It also shows how knowledge builds in the formal elements of Art.
When our children leave us in year 4, we want them to have learned, improved and embedded a range of artistic skills. They should have an awareness of a broad range of artists and craftspeople, and be able to consider and discuss the artworks they come across. We want our pupils to be confident to explore, experiment and take risks, placing value on the process and journey that they take, not just on the finished product. Most importantly, we want children to have developed a love for art as a creative means of self-expression and enjoyment.
Our Visit from a Local Artist
On the 15th and 16th of May 2023, we were extremely lucky to have local artist visit us in school. Jodie Cowler is a local fine line and tattoo artist. She spent time in each class modelling the fundamentals of line art and teaching them how to draw from observation. The children produced some beautiful art based on a variety of birds. After that, we created a gallery wall to show case their wonderful work.
